Open device mgr,if sound is present with exclamation mark, try to install or
get
the error code #.If you have a sound card, power off pc,move the card to other
PCI slot.

When you say "just replaced" what exactly happened?

Was a fresh installation of XP used, or the data copied through a disk
image?

Go into Device Manager and see what the status of your sound controller is,
and note any message.
If nothing appears under Sound, Video and Game controllers ar there any
"unknown" devices.

If XP was freshly installed, it could just be a case of installing drivers
for the sound device.

I installed anew hard drive and a new copy of win.xp from a purchased disk,
it does'nt show any errors in device manager but when I try to use win.media
it says I don't have a sound card installed

You will need to install the drivers for your soundcard and motherboard.
look on the computer makers website for the MB drivers
