Audio problem on Shuttle XPC using Linux

I have just completed construction of a Shuttle SN45G XPC running
Linux Fedora 3. The chipset is nVidia nForce 2 Ultra 400 with Realtek
Codecs. So far I have failed to generate audio from CDs on the Sony
CRX320E CD/DVD combo drive. Soundcard is fine. Also, ripped CDs
generate tracks saved on the hard disk that play fine through the
soundcard. Audio from the drive directly through the front 3.5mm
socket is also fine. I have changed the audio cable that connects the
Sony combo drive with the CD-IN link on the motherboard just in case
it was faulty. Still nothing. Is my problem likely to be hardware or
driver based? I have not yet downloaded specific nVidia drivers as I
am Linux newbie. So far I am relying on the default configurations
installed by Fedora 3 on start-up. Any ideas?

Could it be you forgot to reset the "CD" volume control of the sound mixer ?
