Audio not working after reinstalling system

After a nasty virus got through 3 months ago, I had to reinstall all of my
system cd's. Everything works, even the audio says it is in fine working
order but the only sound I get is a beep when I get email. None of the
disc's say specifically audio, so I went online and downloaded the drivers...
didn't work.
I am tired of having to send anything I really want to hear to my laptop.
Can anyone help me. I have a Dell Demensions 4700, and Windows xp home
edition with service pack 2 installed 2000.
Please help, I have tried everything I know of and some things I didn't know
:).

Go to Dell's tech support site for your machine here:

http://tinyurl.com/yqcxvu

Download drivers for:

Chipset - Intel Chipset S/W
Audio - Analog Devices ADI 198x integrated audio
Modem - if you use a modem you'll need to know which you have
Network - Intel PRO/100 only if your network isn't working now
Video - you need to know which you have or possibly it is working with
the basic ATI driver from Windows.

The normal install path is:

1. Chipset
2. Network
3. Video
4. Audio

If you changed your soundcard from the one that came preinstalled with
the system, you'll need to go to that hardware mftr.'s website and
download the driver.
