audio keeps "machine gunning" on and off

OK, this is weird. my audio will at any given moment starts "machine gunning"
thats what I call it . the little speaker icon in my task bar will just start
muting and un muting itself about a thousand times a minute sounding like a
little machine gun.

It does not do this if I am playing a music file or doing anything that is
using sound. I am pretty sure that the fix is to update my audio drivers. I
have an VIA AC' 97 enhanced audio controller which I guess is my audio driver
.. where can I go to update it ?? I tried to update it in the sound and audio
device properties by clicking the update tab but after re-booting it got rid
of my sound icon and I could not play any audio files so I had to use system
restore.

I am on a windows XP using IE 6 and this is a systemax pc only about 3
years old. It started doing this after I downloaded the big update service
pack that microsoft came out with a few months ago.

If somebody can direct me to an audio driver update site for my particular
driver I would appreciate it.

thanks
Paul

It sounds like an on-board sound chip.
Check the motherboard and the chipset manufacturer's websites for relevant
updates.
