audio device...

I have a wierd issue... I have an XP Pro SP2 machine with embedded
soundcard. If I go to device settings, there is a pile of things under the
"sounds, video and game controllers" tab - and all of them say they are
functioning correctly - Yet I get no sound!!!

If I go to "sounds and audio devices" in the control panel., and go to the
sounds tab, there you should be able to play those small sound clips for the
various program events, but my "play" button is greyed out. If I go to the
Volume tab, everything is greyed out. The Audio tab indicates "No playback
device" and the same with the "voice" tab. I do have a "C-Media AC97 audio
device" (among other things) listed in the devices area and it is listed as
"functioning normally". I also have an icon for it in the system tray, and
when I open that I can actually get a sound!!

However, if I attempt to play a CD though - I get nothing...

What should I be looking for?? Clearly something must need to be installed
or configured.

Thanks,

Brad

Check if Windows Audio service is enabled
Run services.msc
Locate Windows Audio
If disabled, set to automatic and start the service.
