Audio Device...cannot start (Code 10)

Audio in all forms has stopped on my PC (running Win XP Home Ed). This may
have been caused by a shut down without savings settings due to a power
outage or I-Worm/Bagle infection.
Trying to play anything in Windows Media shows video but no sound. Sound
files produce the message "...cannot play file there is a problem with the
sound device.' Checking at Accessories>Entertainment>Volume Control produces
the message'There are no active mixer files available'
I then tried an uninstall and reinstall of C-MediaAC97 Audio Device. After
the reinstall the following message appears "C-Media AC97 Audio Device. This
device cannot start (Code 10)"

It looks like there should be an easy fix, but I can't see it. Oh for the
simplicity of MS-DOS! Any suggestions?

You didn't tell us whether this is a laptop or desktop. The C-Media is
onboard sound, so if you have a desktop disable onboard sound in the
BIOS and throw in a PCI soundcard. You can get a nice basic one for
under $25usd.
