audio but no video playing .avi files

Hello,
I want to watch avi movies with the media player (version 10), but there
is no picture; it is just black. It is the same problem for other
software (nero 7, DivX 6.1 etc.) - I can hear the sound, and shuffle
through the file, which seems to play normally, but without any picture.
The same goes for real player and media player plugins in both internet
explorer and firefox, when I am trying to watch news items on some tv
channel websites for example. Just black rectangles with
sound/commentary/dialogues playing alright!

However, before, it all worked (the same avi files that are now "black"
were running fine) - I just cannot figure out what exactly I have done
to put the software into this state! Everything else works alright, by
the way. I am running Windows XP Professional on a Dell Desktop.

It seems that you may no longer have the correct video CODECs installed. You
can locate a "mega" codec distribution on the Internet. Download and install
it.
