When I copy photos to a cd-rom, they become read only and
I can't make changes to them. I know that I need to
change the attributes but I don't have a clue how to do
that. Before I copy the pictures to a cd, properties
show that the pictures are NOT read only. Please help.
I am not to techy and this throws me for a loop.

CD's are read only so XP makes the files read only. You can't change it because a CD is read only.

When storing files on cd-r, the files always will be read-only, you cannot
make any changes directly to cd-r, (unless you are using a cd-rw ). If you
want to change anything in a file you have to copy it back to your
harddrive, turn off 'read-only' and store a new copy to cd-r. To turn off
'read-only' attribute, rightclock on the file, choose 'Properties' and under
'general'-tab, uncheck the 'read-only' check-box.

Assuming your pictures are in "My Pictures"

1. Start / Run / CMD / OK.
2. Type CD "%userProfile%\My Documents\My Pictures" and press Enter.
3. Type attrib -r *.* and press Enter.
4. Type Exit and press Enter.

CD-R's are always read only by default. You can't edit files on them once
you burn them, just like you can't edit files on a music cd or a game cd.
CD-RW are also read only, but you can "erase" the cd's contents and use it
again.
If you want to edit files directly on a cd you have to use some software
that does packet writing. If you burn a cd-rw using packet writing software
it turns the cd into a giant floppy disk and you can edit files directly on
the cd if you want. Roxio(direct cd) and Nero(incd) are the two most popular
programs that do packet writing.
