Attempting to reduce start up items, to make my system a bit more
efficient,

have XP Home, SP 2, and went into MSCONFIG, via both standard (I am
administrator) method by accessing via RUN,

and after ward by rebooting into safe mode and start computer as
administrator. From administer icon.

Each time I attempt to reconfigure the start-up by switching to selective
start up, eliminating some software that slows my system and each time I am
told I can not make these changes as I must be administrator.

I am administrator.

I reboot, go to see msconfig; no changes take place.

Please advise how I can administer my own system via eliminating some
unnecessary start up devices.

Is there a different way to enter msconfig to make these changes?

Again, I am THE administrator and THE only PC user.

Thanks in advance

Robert

followed suggestion of a different topic within this newsgroup:

created a bogus new account with administrator privileges and this worked in
allowing me to change start up options.

Go figure?!

Thanks to other posters,

using msconfig is the lest efficient process to stop startup programs.
it is best to use the options in each program to tell them to NOT start at boot.
if you use msconfig, it constantly nags you at boot because you have disabled startup items.

IIRC there is a place on the nag screen to stop the nag. But you are
correct to look at each individual program to see if you can stop it
from starting at boot.

Not necessarily.

start at boot.

Yes, certainly that's a better choice, *if* the program in question provides
the option. Not all do. For programs that don't give you the choice,
MSCONFIG is fine.

if you use msconfig, it constantly nags you at boot because you have
disabled startup items.

No, it nags you only if you don't choose the option to not have it nag you.
The choice is very clearly presented, and it's up to you.
