Attack on my computer

Ok, can anyone offer assistance to this:

My xp has some file which keeps putting porn links on my
C drive. Even when I unplug my wireless modem card, and
delete all these links, they reappear upon restart. I
thought it was an IE problem, but the fact that there is
no connection, and the files reappear makes me think
there is a file now on my computer which on start-up
places these files in my "c" directory? I inadvertantly
went to a site 2 days ago, which opened like 8 pop-ups
and I think caused the problem.

Also, is there a setting on IE that closes off IE
activity if you do not access it? The reasdon I ask is
that when I go to my temp folder, there is like 60 sites
supposedly visited, even though I had not actually
clicked on IE yet after clearing folder before the last
restart?

What a mess.....

in the future, try the google toolbar (www.google.com)
which is free and blocks popups. also remove all
permissions to the macromedia folder in winnt/system32 to
disable "movie" ads.

Between the two, you can surf fairly safely with little
bombardment. also to try is webwasher, its a little wierd
but free ad removal and other stuff.

When visiting such the sites be careful not to download/install
their "free" viewers. ;-} To repair the current situation, uninstall
the "viewer(s)" provided and then use Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de
and SpyBot Search and Destroy from http://security.kolla.de/ to clean
up any residue. Both have free evaluation versions.

Hi Bruce.

I did all those things, and fixed a bunch of problems and
potential ones. there still however is some file on my
comuter that has yet to be found which keeps putting porn
links in my "c" drive? Is there a way to trace those
files back to their origin? Or a way to find when files
were originally intalled (like a search list by date) I
know approx when the first issue occured.

Thanks

Greetings --

You might try using MSConfig to see if something is being started
each time you reboot.

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.
