I can't open any attachments in Windows Mail. I have to save them to the
desktopto view.
Can anyone help?

I had the same problem. I googled a lot of experts who usually said to
uninstall IE8. However, one guy said to be sure the email shortcut I was
using has "%UserProfile%" for it's "start in" location. When I checked the
shortcut I was using I found no "start in" option. So I made another
shortcut and it had that option. Now everything works great!

I had the same problem after I updated from IE7 to IE8. I used a previous
Vista restore point to get back to IE7 and now the attachments open again. I
have no idea why my web browser upgrade messed up my e-mail program but it
did. I suspect that some of the security settings may have changed.

Apparently Microsoft wants us to go from the Vista Mail program to a
different mail program (Windows Live?) and they weren't worried that IE8
messed up the Vista Mail program.

The answer below may be a better solution but I'm reporting what I did and
it worked.

You'll find that .JPG and .TXT attachments still won't open.
The best workaround for now is to uninstall IE8 or upgrade
to Windows Live Mail.

Really "everything"??
How about JPG and TXT files?

Normally the latter will still be affected even after having applied the
said workaround.
