You have same problem of mine. It has occured a few weeks ago, me too.
So I questioned it below. Let's wait for a wise answer.

Does the error message say something like, the file can not be found?
If so, that's a known issue that is affecting some who installed IE8.
Until such time as Microsoft releases a fix, all you can do is use one of
these three workarounds.

1) Uninstall IE8, which reverts you back to IE7.
2) Save attachments first, then open them outside of Windows Mail.
3) Upgrade to Windows Live Mail.

Ellei's solution worked for me. I didn't follow it exactly, it simply
made me realise that some property of the temporary internet files
folder had been changed to stop attachments opening. In fact the
folder and all the files in it were read only. You cant stop the
folder being read only as it resets to that by default but I found
that by unchecking the read only tab once, in future all files saved
into the folder are no longer read only. Dont ask me how.

Here is what i did

I had to first go to control panel, do a search on the search tab for
folder options, then pick options show hidden files and uncheck the
box marked hide system files to be able to even see the temporary
internet files folder.

The I did part of what Ellei said - internet properties on the windows
mail and choose settings under browsing history - to see what my
existing path was to the temporary internet files folder. Then I used
windows explorer (right click on start button and choose explore) to
follow that path to the folder (was c:\users\ (your user name) \appdata
\local\microsoft\windows\temporary internet files\ (note that there
is another temporary internet files folder one level up as well but
thats not the one mail uses)

I checked security on the folder above this to make sure i had full
control over the folder and all those below. Then unchecked read only
and applied it to all files and folders below. It now works and I can
open attachments.

Moving the folder as ellei suggests will work too as the new folder
will not have whatever attributes caused the problem in the first
place.

I admit Im not sure why this even happened at all. I read that updates
reset atributes and paths so perhaps thats the cause.

Aurore,
thanks for your success report.

Was the problem really cured persistently?
On my systems after a short while the problem always came back after a
short while.

For me, just delete ALL temporary internet files (just the files are
necessary - hstory, password not necessary to be deleted)
And the problem gone. Also, I set the cache size for teporary internet files
less than 99mb and for now it is working and the problem never happened again

Don't shout of joy too early.
The problem will return after while.

Pls be so kind as to watch things and test with JPG and TXT attachments
several times, today, tomorrow.
And pls report back.

I had the same issue and it coincided with downloading Quick Time. I just
removed the program and all issues have been cleared up.

The IE8 issue can be intermittent, so if the problem returns, you know what to do.
