Attachments 'yawn'

hi guys. Total novice calling. Can't open attachments (doc files?) on Vista
from sent my workplace, which runs XP. I'm getting set associations message
(thought I had). Also, can't open when saved to my desktop either. I've been
thru many of the previous Q&A's but have not found a definitive answer. I've
unchecked attachment in tools/security and still no go. Could someone please
talk me through what I'm sposed to do?
 
Two questions:

1.) Do you have Word or Word Viewer installed?
2.) Is the attachment has .doc or .docx extension?

Well, if you can't open saved attachments from the desktop, then it is
not a Windows Mail problem. As the other responder already asked,
do you have the appropriate program installed that is meant to open
those attachments?
