Attachments in Outlook

Can anyone help with this one?
When sending attachments through Outlook to Hotmail/
Yahoo/Btinternet etc accounts, my attachments can only be
read if I am replying to an email. If I send a new message
and attach a document, the recipient sees a .dat file and
not a .doc file? What's going on? Is there something I can
do my end to prevent this happening?

Thanks

You are sending using Rich Text Format. Only Outlook can read RTF. Change
the Mail Format to Plain Text (preferred) or HTML

Thanks for your reply and advice. Greatly appreciated as
it seems to have worked. The strange thing is that the
person I share my office with uses RTF and does not have
this problem with attachments!?! Doesn't make sense really
though he is using a later version of Outlook. Could that
explain it?

it depends on what email client the recipient is using. If they're using
outlook, then it's OK. If not, it doesn't work!
