attachment versions

I sent a msg with an excel file attached. Then I opened the message and the
attachment from my 'sent items' and made modifications to the excel file. I
saved the file upon exiting from excel.

Now, when I open the attachment from the email in my sent items, the
original excel information appears and the file is titled "xxxx (3).xlsx"

I tried modifying that file and saving it. When I open the attachment
again, it's labeled "xxxx (4).xlsx"

I'd like to find the excel file with first modification that I made (likely
titled "xxxx (2).xlsx") but I don't know where to look or what to look for.
I've searched my hard drive for the name and for files from that date but I
haven't been able to find it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Open the attachment and click Save As and you'll see the folder. Click the
Save In drop-down and you'll see the entire path. While you cannot browse to
that folder, you can open it if you enter its exact path in Windows Explorer's
Address field. Here's an explanation:

Never modify a message attachment without saving it to a known folder on your
hard drive first unless you understand the side-effects of what you're doing.
