Attachment Hyperlink opens with IE! Stop!

Outlook opens Internet Explorer when a user clicks on a hyperlink in an
email. If somebody sends me a local/LAN machine storage link for a file as a
hyperlink, even that opens in IE! Why? For example, someone saves an image on
common server and sends me a link on mail. When I click, the image opens in
IE instead of my default imaging program. How do I stop this?

Got an example?

Can mail you screenshots-cant upload here.

Screenshot 2 is the email message, where the IP address listed is our office
intranet ID..have blurred it for security reasons.
Screenshot 1 is the link opening in IE instead of IrfanViewer of Microsoft
Photo viewer. Irfan is my default.
Why?

Sure you can, with a real newsreader. However, you don't need a screenshot.
Just type an example of the link. I find that links like this work for me:

<\\server\folder\folder\folder\file.ext>

Outlook and OE will not let you email actual link files. There is a
difference in the way the link is created if you say in IE to send the link
and if you just copy the path. For instance:

1. If you create a shortcut and email it, Outlook blocks.
2. If in IE you go File -> Send link in Email. Outlook blocks.

The reason is item 1 is a file that ends in .LNK for an extention which is
blocked. Item 2 is a .URL file that is blocked as well. Ways around this
are to do the following:

1. To send a link to a page, in the address bar of IE copy out the full path
http://www.someserver.com/somepath/somepage.html and you will be all set.
2. If you have a shortcut on your desktop that you want to send someone on
the network so they have it themselves you can either zip the shortcut and
send it or just right-click on the shortcut and copy out the path to the
document an send them that path so they can do it themselves.
