Attachment Arrange By: View

S

SJMP

When I select Attachment on the "Arrange By" view in the inbox it pulls up
some attachments, but not all of them. Wondering why and what I need to do to
address this issue. When I selected this view it pulled up attachments but
not the one I was looking for. When I searched for that email it was there,
and it did have the attachment and I could open the attachment.

Running outlook 2003 sp3.

Hi SJMP,

Does the issue only occur with a specific message with attachment?

When you click View > Arranged By > Attachment, all messages in the folder will be sorted by "No attachments" and "with attachments". Do
you mean that the specific message with attachment is sorted in the group "no attachments"?

Follow the steps below to take a screen shot for me.
------------------------------------------------------------------
a. In Outlook, locate the specific message with attachment in the Inbox folder. Click the View menu > Arranged By > attachment > if it still
highlight the specific message, press the print screen key. If not, scroll down to find that specific message, and then press the print screen
key.

b. Open MS Paint program (click Start menu > All Programs > Accessories > Paint).
c. Click Edit (menu) -> Paste or press Ctrl + V.
d. Click File (menu) -> Save. Save it as a *.jpg file and send it to me as an attachment. My Email address is (e-mail address removed).

At this point, I recommend you to do the following general troubleshooting steps to see if it works.

Clean outlook views
============
1. Exit Outlook.
2. Click Start > Run > type outlook /cleanviews, click OK.
3. Test the issue. What is the result?

Repair Outlook 2007
==============
In Outlook 2007, click Help > Office Diagnostic > click Continue to repair the Outlook installation. And then go to Microsoft Update site to
check and install all available updates.

Test the issue again.

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Emily it is listed as no attachment. But the PDf file is there. There are
other emails from the same account with attachments that do show up on the
list. I beleive the pdf was scanned as an image to the email.

I did the cleanviews switch and got the same results.

I sent you an email with the screen shots.

Just to follow up found something here. That attachment was in the sorted
list. It was just down towards the bottom. The missing attachment was on the
email dated 4/22/08. If you notice it is all the way below 2006 emails that
were also sorted attachments. The screen shot on the RIGHT is the top of the
list and the email 3/13/08 – is from the same email address as the 4/22
email. Not sure why it is sorting this way. Any information would be helpful.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your reply and the screen shot.

Based on your message and the screen shot, I understand that: The message with attachment was sorted in the With Attachments group.
However, it is not sorted by received date (it is below 2006 emails) correctly. If I misunderstood, let me know.

It is mostly caused that the sort setting in the current view is not set properly. Follow the steps below to sort the message by Attachments,
and then sort by received date.
============
1. In Outlook 2007, click View > Current View > Customize Current View.
2. Click the Sort button.
3. In the Sort dialog box, choose Attachment in 'Sort Item by'. Choose Receive in the 'Then by' field.
4. Click OK, OK.

5. Check the issue again. What is the result?

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Emily,

Very strange I made the change you suggested but it still does not work. Now it did organize the attachments by receive date but except for
some which are put on the bottom of the list. Please see below.

Same as before: I have removed the names/subject for security. You see the list puts the most recent at the end. The beginning of the list
starts with April 2008¡. Not sure what is going on here.

Hi Scott,

According to current situation, I suppose that the issue is caused by a corrupted message in the Inbox folder or there is a corrupted view
cache file. Perform the steps below and let me know the result.

#1 come into Outlook safe mode
==================
1. Exit Outlook.
2. Click start > Run > type outlook /safe, click OK.
3. Sort by the Attachment column.
4. Check the view. Are the messages with attachments sorted by 'Received' properly?

If so, exit Outlook. And then search for the file views.dat and then rename it as views.old. (By default, the file is on the folder %userprofile%
\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\)
Start Outlook. What is the result?

If the issue persists, go to next step.

#2 Check if the same situation occurs on other folder such as the Sent Items folder.

#3 move all the messages on 4/22/2008 (which cannot be sorted properly) to another folder. Send some testing messages with attachments
to yourself. When you receive them, sort the Inbox folder. Are the new received messages with attachments sorted properly?

Perform the steps and let me know the exact result. Thanks.

Emily Lin,
