ATItech help strange. Please confirm.

Hi all.

I recently recieved advice from ATI tech help that I find a bit hard to
believe, so I thought I would ask here if it makes any sense.

I have been trying to get DVD playing stable on my system for about a year
now,
Windows 98, asus A7V8X, athlon xp 2600, 512M ram, radeon 9500 pro.

Problem: playing DVD movies causes the system to freeze, usually within the
first few minutes.
This only happens after I have Updated the display-driver/control panel
which needs to be done for the sake of modern games. The dvd player works
very well with the software installed off of the CD (catalyst 3.1 I think).

After several clean installs of drivers and updates with no success I was
told I should do so again, but with the following

1: CatalystXPdriver found at www.ATI.com/Home/online/CatalystXPdriver.html

2: www2.ati.com/drivers/atiCDWiz4-0.exe

3: www2.ati.com/drivers/mmc-9-1-0-0.exe
and
4: www2.ati.com/drivers/mmc-9-1-0-0-dao-mdac.exe

Am I mistaked but are not 3 out of 4 of the above suggestions intended for
windows XP???

Should I try to install these drivers????
(I have tried atiCDwiz4-0, it doesn't do anything properly, I cannot get it
to connect to download the required files, nor aticdwiz3. aticdwiz2.x does
work, but I think it just installs whatever I have already on my CD).

I also understand with the mmc 9.1 that windows encoder 9.x has to be
installed. Is there a windows 98 version of this or is this XP/2000 only
also??

Finally.... On the CD's that ATI sells, do they have the up to date
catalyst/mmc/dvd software for win98 on these CD's or will I only be getting
a clone of hatever I already have?

Many thanks for your advice.

Waz, post your current system config. If you can upgrade to Xp please do
so, even Win2000 would be an improvement.

Best of luck

Steve, that website is from another country like Russia or something. I
would not trust it with my credit card. Plus those prices are way too cheap
to be legit. There has to be a hidden catch, like it's bootleg burned cds
or Russian black market products.
