ATI's next gen R420 getting 2-3x performance gains

The FACT that the optical
drive in ANY of the current generation of consoles WILL wear out is
why I KNOW it's important.

Barring any defects, do you even know the MTBF of a modern day optical
drive? Try google, you might be surprised. That is , unless you plan on
doing handsprings off the ejected tray - In which case it is not wearing
out, but abuse. I have CD players 10+ years old that keep going strong, and
DVD players are made to a higher standard, MTBF wise.

But just for the record, I still do not like optical media due to the fact
that you have to handle the data.

How shallow of an entertainment center did you buy? You DEFINITELY would
not be able to use a flat CDchanger or TV in this setup...

That is,a TV that exceeds a total depth of 14". Flatscreens WILL fit. ;)

Checking Google produced some interesting results for me. Most optical
drives either had a MTBF of 50, 60 or 100 thousand for power on hours
(POH). Must did not list a duty rate but I found a good example for a 48x
Lite-On CD-ROM with a MTBF of 120 thousand POH with a 10% duty rate. I do
believe the duty has an impact upon an optical drives MTBF. Consoles have
a much, much higher duty rate than 10% and may use custom technologies in
the drives.

True but the optical disks have an comparitively large life span compared
to magnetic media. The only feasible thing superior to optical in
duribility and life span are cartridges.

What about 4 or 5 and so and so forth???

In my small bedroom (12' x 10' or so), I have: Dreamcast, Xbox,
PS2, Gamecube, TurboGrafx, SNES, NES, N64, Intellivision,
Atari 2600, 27" TV in entertainment center with receiver, VCR,
DVD player, CD player, cassette deck, speakers, PC, and a
couple bookcases (with books, magazines, and games), PC
monitor, printer, air cleaner, and that's not even counting the
closet or regular furniture like a chair and desk. I also have most
of my consoles' original boxes here as well.

Is the room full? Quite, but it's arranged intelligently and very
useable. Are all the consoles connected simultaneously? No,
but several of them are. A backwards-compatible Xbox2 would
allow me to get rid of one console. Big whoop.

In any case, those with that many consoles, obviously including
myself, are not common by any means, so Microsoft or any
console maker doesn't really have to take into account how
that many consoles are going to fit in a room.

The only girls that have been in that room of mine are my partner
of close to 8 years who lives with me in the house and her twin
sister who visits every now and then and sleeps in there (on a futon
that I set up). I've heard no complaints. In any case, the room was
not set up to impress girls and I haven't needed to do that for quite
some time now.

Do you impress a lot of girls with your game setup? Guess I don't
blame you for trying to distract them with something...anything.
Do they get really wet and swoon when you regale them with
accounts of your Microsoft hatred?

Actually, with one yes... ;)

Naaa... I don't discuss my hatred of a illegal monoploy who seeks to
control everyone's computers with Palladium.

I encourage everyone to read that FAQ. Just read it, and then turn each
"fact" upside down, and you're getting closer to what tcpa really is.

It's been awhile since I've seen so many false rumors and incorrect "facts"
on a single web page.

( ...maybe when Apple said that G5 was "the first 64bit & fastest computer
on the universe" ... )

Here a real FAQ, with actual facts:

Wow, so there actually *is* someone out there stupid enough to believe
Microsofts bullshit.

maybe they are. Better go and hide under the bed!

er... thats a FUNNY joke! Really it is...!

That's like asking asking the burgler in your house with a gun, "are
you going to rob me and worse" and he says "na, Im just visiting"...

Trust Microsoft? The company that steals others software because
they can't actually develop anything original?

TCPA = a SCARY thing.... WindowsXP is already proof of TCPA true plan
to control our computer.

WindowsXP can already self destruct.

Will... TCPA is about the only Weapon M$ has to retain control of the
world's PCs - cause Linux is growing rapidly and they can't "BUY"
Linux. With TCPA fully operational, our computers will truely suck...
I'd retire from mine.

Will... TCPA is about the only Weapon M$ has to retain control of the

And we are know that Linux is perfectly safe... because we all compile our
own kernals.. and we all only run executable we compile from known source
code.. even then without the use of precompiled libraries..

Face it - there are now and will always be unknowns with running software
that we do not create ourselves. The future, being interconnected, will be
more so, DRM issues being only the tip of the iceberg. It is apparent that
you have decided Microsoft is a problem, but how can you eliminate any
other source as well? It sound like you are as blind to the problem as
anyone else by focusing just on Microsoft.
