Based on the responses I have read in this thread it appears that is very
possilbe that the card itself is faulty.

Possible but considering it works fine under XP (including the gaming I
do do) it seems unlikely.

I've had a breakthrough. I removed my old AverMedia AverTV tuner/capture
card and Vista then saw ATI X850 card and I was able to install the ATI
software and drivers. My Vista Experience score jumped from 1.0 to 4.8

The Vista Upgrade Advisor said the AverTV card and the modem card both
were OK. Vista even installed drivers for the AverTV card but it keeps
the ATI card from working. OTOH Vista can't find any drivers for the modem.

I still have the one Unknown Device in Device Manager, though it doesn't
seem to cause any problems so I'll probably just leave it.

Is your X850 card an AGP card and was the AveMedia card if the PCI slot next
to it? If so try the AverMedia card in another slot.

No, it's a PCI Express. I did have the AverMedia card in the next slot,
though. Maybe I'll move it down and see what happens. Although, I did
try to install the Aver software back on the Vista preview edition I had
and it wouldn't install. Considering the thing is 6 or 7 years old it
may not be worth spending much time on it.

Do you have Vista drivers for your AverMediaCard if yes they may not support
running in the MC application if Avermedia does not have MC compatible
drivers for it in VISTA or in MCE 2005. Does the card have an onboard MPEG2
encoder if not I am quite sure that it will not work with the MC application
in either VISTA or MCE 2005.

Don't have Vista drivers and I doubt there'll be any. The XP drivers are
from 2002. I don't have the particulars for the hardware so can't answer
your other question. Like I said it's no great loss if I never use it again.
