ATI TV Dies/Freezes on XP SP2

I keep waiting for ATI to produce software that actually works with XP
SP2. I'm running the CATALYST Control Center version 1.2.2044.226 and
Multimedia Center 9.08. Ever since installing SP2 for XP I've been
unable to find a collection of ATI drivers and software that will run
for an extended period without freezing which causes me to have to power
cycle the machine.

The card is the 9600 ATI All in Wonder.

If you had this problem, have you been able to eliminate it?

Nope. I have the 8500DV, and it is hit and miss with recording via the
PVR as-supplied.
Have a 50ft a/v line coming into the unit. Recording 'live' TV and it
runs up to a point where it used ~3G of drive space. I have teh windwos
limit checked, so we are good to at least 4G for one file. Odd,
considering it worked fine previously.
Have MMC 9.08. Forget which Catalyst drivers.

Hi, webnuts.

I've had my share of problems with ATI AIW TV - and still do. But I've had
some successes, too.

My computer is an EPoX 8KDA3+ mobo/AMD Athlon 64 3200+/1 GB RAM, plus an ATI
AIW 9600. I'm quad-booting both the x86 (32-bit) and x64 (64-bit) versions
of both WinXP Pro SP2 and Windows Vista (currently build 5219; 5231 is being
downloaded now).

I've been watching TV on WinXP for a couple of years now, starting with the
AIW 9000. It still works fine in WinXP x86, using the 5.9 drivers and MMC
9.08.

But I've never been able to get the TV to work in WinXP x64 or in Vista x64.
It tries to work in Vista x86, but "fails to initialize the video", then
dies.

Much of my frustration comes from ATI's maddeningly complex system of
installing and upgrading drivers. When I try to install or upgrade and it
doesn't work, I'm never sure whether it's bad drivers, bad MMC software, or
just that I failed to uninstall the old and reinstall the new in the proper
sequence - or if I just forgot to blink at the right moment during the
installation. :>( Bottom line, though, is that I've taken a lot of my time
to go through the long rigmarole - and it still doesn't work.

I have a similar problem after reinstalling fresh Win XP SP2 and
MMC9.08, cpu goes dead at random times with TV app running, keyboard
freezes, and monitor goes black, requires power shut off and restart.

I removed the latest cat drivers & MMC9.08 using the ATI uninstall and
went back to Cat 5.1 and MMC 9.03. still have the problem. Never had a
problem with this combination before. The only time it locks is when
the TV app is running and happens in at seemingly random times, more
frequently if other programs are running as well, but has never locked
without the TV app running.

The uninstall apparently does not remove all ati files from cpu as I
had to manually remove some ati files from SYS32 folder in order to
get back to analog sound and get rid of audio delay caused by the
digital sound used by new drivers. I suspect something from the MMC
9.08 remains causing the lockup problem but have no idea what.

Don't blame yourself: it's the hyperthreding problem.

Not to sure about that. I am using the X-600 Express Bus ATI card and Asus
P5AD2-E motherboard.
I just went into my BIOS and turned off hyperthreading and still had the
video lock up.

I have the latest ATI drivers installed. This has been the most frustrating
board I have ever owned. Customer service also stinks. No more ATI cards
for me.
