ati radeon with good 2d quality

I am used to Matrox graphics cards due to their 2d quality and
currently I am using a Milennium G450 dual head.

Is the 2d quality in the low end ati radeon graphic cards comparable or
better?

Which model should I buy? I would like to get some low-cost
recommendation.

An ATI 9600 is under $100
