ATi Driver (RC1)

M

Marc Nutty

Hi,

Well I know Ati have released an RC1 driver (catalyst) program, however I
dont know if I should bother installing.

Firstly, the driver date is already 15/8/06, and secondly, when I have
installed the Catalyst software before it has slowed down my comp a little,
and yet i hardly ever use it myself lol.

So, what am asking is... have you instaleld it and does the catalyst help in
ANYWAY ?

cheers,

I just installed this "driver" and what it did to my system was not nice...
After restart my computer restarted and restarted and so on....
So I used "last known good" and know everything just works fine.
I have an ATI X800 graka

Cheers

It is always a good idea to install the latest graphics drivers. Not only
for Vista or for Windows in general.

The Manufacturers Drivers offer very much more than the OS built in drivers,
and if you are going to play 3D games or do Photoshop / CAD / Poser / Bryce
etc you will need them, too.

The trouble with Ati is, the new RC1 drivers are just experimental. They
have no real OpenGL and are very Beta and buggy as I can say. It is just a
"first try" to say so.

Nvidia has done much better work with their release of RC1-drivers, but on
special cards have issues, too.

Let's just wait some weeks. As more and more people will run RC1 and the
developers are going used to it, too, we will see newer and better drivers,
Believe me.

Hi Guys,
I've tested RC1 with OS installed driver and with ATI's catalyst and at the
moment am running with OS only driver as my system is faster without
catalyst. Will keep an eye for the next ati driver and test that as soon as.

Hey Guys,
The ATI Drives Dated 9-2-06 really worked good for me... everything is much
smoother. You have to do the Windows Vista Full install which has the x86
and the x64 ... don't know why... but it worked for me in both x86 and x64.
PS... I'm using a X1600 pro and a TV Wonder Elete

Hi OpeXp
Did you instal the full ati package or just the RC1 driver without the
catalyst controls?
My system was slower with the full package. Am using a 9550GE/256MB.

Same issues as above with the ATI Catalyst drivers on a clean install 64bit
RC1 Dell E510. The download package with the Catalyst control was a
nightmare. I quickly restored the system before the install, and absolutely
no problems. ATI needs some work done still, it appears.

Mik,
The onboard ATI drivers in RC1 are working just fine here.
Not a problem in this Dell e1505

I agree with Sascha 100%. You'll want manufacturers' drivers for 3D games,
Photoshop, DAZ/Corel Bryce, etc. However, I also agree that Ati's RC1
drivers are horrible. I'm using the Beta 2 drivers on RC1, and they work
much better. The included drivers for an Ati card on RC1 at this point is
better than the Ati-made RC1 drivers.

I used the combined x86 and x64 package from the Ati site here with my x850
pro and had no problems at all, eventhing is running smoothly here. However
it would be nice for ATi to make a build of the video capture drivers for my
VIVO funtions :D

For me to use my 2 monitors in portrait mode, I needed to install the
Catalyst drivers. Works great for me. I am using a ATI 9600 Pro.
