ATI 9600 XT Availabilty

M

Mavra Chang

Anyone,
Does any body know when the 9600 XT is going to be generally
available? I thought it was early November.
Also where are all the 5700 ultras? BestBuy had one on rebate last week but
you can only find a couple online. I seem to have seen something about one
or two of the fab plants that nVidia and ATI get their chips from running a
shortage. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My distributor release date on the 9600 is now Nov 12th in the USA

Bill

Bill,

Please pardon a couple of questions. Who is your distributor? Do you
believe it to be general availability, or just a trickle?

Incidentally, I purchased an eVGA 5700 Ultra at Best Buy but took it
back after three days. It was less than stellar. Waiting for a 9600
XT...

Its Tech Data and they have 100 cards arriving for sale to resellers like
myself. I have myself down for one. I thought about the 5700 but changed my
mind. Tech Data doesnt sell to the general public and I dont know when
retail stores like Comp USA will get there supply.

Also the arrival date has been bumped three times since ATI announced the
card. Hopefully Nov 12th will stick.

Thanks for the info guys. I hope the gates open on Newegg and the like. I
really would like see that Asus come in at ZipZoomFly as well.

Bill and Nathan,

I have sent an email to ATI to see if I can get some information from
them on availability. Any news I will share here.

In your opinion, do you think the Asus card has more value than a
stock ATI card? Why or why not? Also, what about SapphireTech? I
was an ATI customer until I switched to the nVidia line with the TNT2
years ago. I currently own an nVidia GeForce 4 TI4200, but my next
card will be ATI technology (likely the 9600 XT). I don't know much
about the quality and value of cards from ATI's licensees.

Thanks Mike appreciate that.

I honestly cant give an opinion about your brand or upgrade path, save to
say the 9600XT will give you DX9 benefits over the TI4200 and maybe some
modest frame rate increase.

Cheers

Bill and Nathan,

The final word: I purchased an ATI 9600 XT last night, and installed
it. I got it from our local Best Buy, which seems to have them in
modest quantity now (but not down on the shelf yet - I found it in the
topstock area). I tested Jedi Academy, MS FS 2004, Mace Griffin, and
Max Payne 2. This is subjective, of course, but with almost all the
graphic features turned on in each game (something I was not able to
do with the nVidia TI4200), I did not lose framerates and gained DX9
functions. The 'look' of the games has improved, too. So far I am
very pleased. Thanks for the help, guys.

FWIW, ATI sent me a reply to my request for availability on the 9600
XT:

"Regarding the 9600 XT:

The 9600 XT is currently out of stock. We do not have any information
regarding when we will receive more stock, but are expecting to have
them shipping soon. Please check the web site often for updates.
