OK guys. here's a tough one for you all.
Customers PC 256MB ram, 600 celeron, 40x CDROM, 20GB
Seagate HD, 32MB graphic card, Internal modem, LAN card,
ABIT VA6 Motherboard. Used to run win98 and was fine.
Customer wanted to upgrade to Windows XP Pro. During
installation we receive a blue screen error VERY early in
the setup to nstall process, certainly the files are not
all being copied to the hard drive. the error is a STOP:
7B error concerning ATAPI.SYS and requires a re-boot.
Tried installing XP on another customers new 20GB HD
attached to a known good PC (mine), Intalled fine.
Restarted repeatedly OK on MY motherboard. Move HD to
customers motherboard and XP starts. replaces all its
drivers for the ones it wants for customers motherboard
and restarts ok. Power down (or restart) and system does
not eve make it to the XP loading screen but drops out
and complains that a file is currupt but doesnt report
WHAT the filename is. And from then on customers PC wont
start and want to go to the recovery console.
VERY frustrating this one guys. I am beginning to wonder
about the motherboard as I have exchanged nearly
everything else with no success. Any
suggestions?....ANYONE??......pleeeease!

What IDE controller is on that machine? Thats your most likely cause of the
STOP 7B, especially that early in the install. Try a BIOS update and use F6
for the IDE card if the card happens to have a driver.
