I just installed a new copy of XP professonal. I have done all of the updates except for SP1. When I try to install the update I get to the point where it is performing an inventory. It then gives me the error of "the file c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys is open or in use by another application." I have tried closing almost everything down through task manager with no luck. I have tried starting in safe mode with no luck. Is there something that might be running in the background that would cause this? Is there any walk around to this problem. I never had this problem before now installing the SP1. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have seen this notably on Dell systems and was corrected by installing
SP1a. Good luck!

how is do I install service pack 1a? Is that the same service pack that installs when you go to windows update? If now, where can I find SP1a? Thank you
