At wits end

Can anyone help before I go insane. I can't believe the amount of time I've
burnt trying to get outlook working.

I'm using office 2003.

I added a pop3 account and everything was working ok. I added a hotmail
account then removed it and then I could not send any mails from the pop3
account.

I hit the problem where I get an immediate response from sysadmin 'saying
None of your e-mail accounts could send to this recipient.'

The from field in the sent folder is left null which i believe to be part of
the problem. Other people have reported this and there's an article on
Microsoft which reports the problem with no available fix.

I totally uninstalled office, deleted manually all the appropriate
directories, cleared the offce entries from the registries and ran the
officer cleaner from the office CD.

I reinstalled, created a new profile, etc. tried to send outgoing mail and
then got the 500 Relay not permitted problem. I didn't get this before.

I then installed Service Pack1 and went right back to the bloody beginning
with the could not send to any receipients and the 'from' field being left
blank.

Any ideas at all please?

(I've also now got another slightly annoying problem - when I book up the
machine and I'm presented with the profile to select it tells me I've got 4
unread emails. How do I get rid of this? I don't have unread emails, I
previously deleted the accounts and profiles, etc.

Hi Dianne,

Thanks for the unread email link. That at least is sorted now.

Authentication made no difference.

The current problem does not seem to be fixable. I guess I'll need to do
another uninstall and reinstall.

The annoying thing is that everything was working (sp1 installed) until I
added the hotmail account and removed it.

I guess I've got 2 choices now. Somehow figure out how to do a totally clean
uninstall to get back to the place I was at originally (pre hotmail being
added) OR remove SP1 and then address the 550 error. I should be able to work
with SP1 though since it was previosuly. Is there a way to uninstall SP1?

uninstall is a waste of time - did you try a new profile?

Hi,

Yes I tried a new profile and added my email account to the new profile. I
even had the mail from the profile delivered to a new .pst file.

Unfortunately none of this helped.

Since the problem happened after adding and removing the hotmail account can
we assume that some settings are still causing this and by clearing these
setting I should be able to revert to the pre-hotmail state of everything
working?

Other than creating a new profile which I've already done what else could I
do?

Thanks
Nick

I noticed in one of your previous messages that you said when you tried a
new mail profile that you go the "no relaying allowed" reply. This is
usually because you're not authenticating to the outgoping server. In the
new profile, when you added the POP account, did you specify the outgoing
authentication options?

Hi,

Everything was working fine without the relay problem originally, until I
added and removed the hotmail account.

I got the relay problem after reinstalling Office2003 and before applying
Service Pack1. I tried all options of authentification with no joy.

After applying SP1 I went straight back to the could not deliver problem and
blank FROM field in the sent folder.

I still believe since it was working prior to installing the hotmail account
I should be able to get back to this position somehow, e.g. proper
uninstall,etc.

Thanks

Well, it certainly does for me. Moreover, it's guaranteed that the Hotmail
account can have no effect if you start with a fresh mail profile.

I don't understand your response. Can you clarify what you mean by 'well it
certainly does for me'?

I don't see how you can make a sweeping statement saying that it's
guaranteed that adding an hotmail account can have no affect if you start
with a fresh profile.

To recap everything was working until I added the hotmail account and then
removed it. I have since reinstalled, and totally created a new profile, new
pst, etc. etc. etc.

As mentioned previously and referenced to on my other posts other users have
encountered exactly the same problem when a hotmail account is added and
removed.

Additionally there exists a Microsoft article stating that the 'cannot send
mail to any recipients' with the BLANK FROM field is a registered problem
with no fix.

The bottom line is that I've got a product which is unusable and I've burnt
close to 10 hours trying to get working.

I say that because a fresh profile will have NO accounts in it until you add
one and if you don't add a Hotmail account to the profile, it can't affect
that profile.
To recap everything was working until I added the hotmail account and
then removed it. I have since reinstalled, and totally created a new
profile, new pst, etc. etc. etc.

Well, I've added and removed Hotmail accounts several times and thay haven't
affected my other accounts or how Outlook handles those accounts. But if
they did, I'd click Start>Control Panel>Users>Mail>Show Profile>Add and
create a new one. Is that what you did?
As mentioned previously and referenced to on my other posts other
users have encountered exactly the same problem when a hotmail
account is added and removed.

I don't doubt you're having trouble. I don't doubt others do as well. What
I contend, however, is that it's not a systemic problem with Outlook or
EVERYONE would have the same problem.
Additionally there exists a Microsoft article stating that the
'cannot send mail to any recipients' with the BLANK FROM field is a
registered problem with no fix.

The bottom line is that I've got a product which is unusable and I've

Perhaps, then, it's time to pony up $35 and have Microsoft take a look.

I appreciate what you say about a new profile but nonetheless I still have a
problem and I have gone the route of creating a new profile and delivering
the profiles mail to a new datafile, etc. The profile was obviously empty when
I created it so I added only my pop3 mail account yet still the problem
persists.

I agree it may not be a systematic problem of outlook but I maintain it is
still an outlook problem. Again, everything was working until I added and
removed the hotmail account and new profiles, new datafiles, uninstall,
reinstall have not helped.

My machines state did not change between it working and not working other
than adding and removing the account. I never installed any other software,
changed settings, etc.

Other evidence that it is a outlook problem is the fact that a knowledge
base article exists which exactly describes my problem (with no solution)

Again, I maintain that the uninstall, new datafile, new profile, etc. must
leave something behind otherwise the problem would have been resolved
following these steps.

Yes, I will probably have to stump $35 but I resent doing so since I
certainly never caused the problem and I never utilised any functionality
outside of the core product. Why should I have to further finance Microsoft
for resolving a problem with their product.

I shouldn't have had to waste time going through an uninstall, etc. but I
did, and I would have expected that an uninstall be clean, clearly it is not.
This is also supported by other members and MVP's who have commented on my
threads.

So in conclusion I'm going to have to pay to fix deficient software and a
deficient uninstall program.

I've also probably burnt GBP 800 worth of my chargeable time with this.

You mean this article?
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;872896

It's wrong. For starters, Outlook 2003 *cannot* be configured to receive an
NDR message for all recipients.

If you can send me the send/recieve log (to (e-mail address removed)), we'll take a
look at it and verify it's the problem in that KB (which is really an
authentication issue, which they don't mention). Enable logging on tools,
options, other, advanced - more information is at
