At wit's end - "No Audio Device"

I GOT IT!!!! WOOOOHOOOO! Finally. Way too many hours spent on
this. First, your questions/comments...

In services, make sure that the WinAudio service is enabled,
automatic, and running. Then in Device Manager, System Devices make
sure Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator is installed ok.
Yes, I checked that every so often. It was always on.
There is more that is needed...continue reading.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now using the New hardware Wizard:

add new hardware \ have disk (select the temp dir
with the modified machine.inf) and install the
plug and play software enumerator

(swenum.sys is found in system32\drivers
streamci.dll is found in system32
or they can be found on your windows disk)
The interesting thing about that is I tried deleting each of these and
they would come right back, without me doing anything.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once that is reinstalled, uninstall the sound card drive, do a scan
for hardware changes then after it finds and reinstalls that card, you
should have sound again.
I was right that the sound card install is just fine.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here is what I needed to do...

I did need to fix the PnP Device Enumerator. HOWEVER, I read this
site:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/forum/i...6&pid=101347&mode=threaded&start=#entry101347

and that said I should delete all the registry entries for swenum. So
I did that and reinstalled the PnP Device Enumerator. At first it
generated an error and did not work. So I rebooted and tried again.
It worked this time. I then uninstalled my sound driver, the OS
automatically found it again and it installed correctly. Now it
works.

Finally...THANKS for all your help, everyone who responded.

Good to hear, and thanks for posting where you found your solution. Others
will appreciate it.

I'm following this discussion because I have the precisely identical problem
after simply upgrading to SP2. No sound device works on my Dell Inspiron
5150 after the upgrade and installation of patches. Device manager reports
the stock sound card driver is working fine. It also reports an external USB
audio I/O device is working fine. The sounds and Audio Devices panel in
Control Panel shows shows "No Audio Device" and does not let anything be
selected for Default Audio Device.

The Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator is "not working properly". It
reports (Code 31) as mentioned, but the two files are indeed there
(swenum.sys and streamci.dll). Replacing those files with backups did not
work.

Changing audio drivers does not help. Installing Microsoft's driver patch
for this XP/SP2/Sigmatel C-Major audio combination, did not help.

I was having the problem for the most part was the fix. I did have to go
into the registery and deleted all "swenum" entries. Then uninstalled the
Plug and Play Enumerator. Restarted just for the hell of it, then installed
the Plug and Play Software Enumerator. It reinstalled without that Yellow
Exclamtion mark, installed the sound card again, and VIOLA I had sound again.

I had the same problem on a highly modified and upgraded Medion PC MT6 with a
RealTek ALC 650 audio chip. I also wasted many hours uninstalled and
reinstalled a number of different versions of the sound driver, reformatting
my HD reinstalling Window, doing system restores, etc, etc all with no luck.
Thanks to this post I was able to use the same solution to reinstall the PnP
SW enumerator and I now have my sound back. Amazing M$ wanted me to pay them
for helping me fix something they broke with an update to on their flawed SW!
Thanks to all of you for seeing this problem through and posting it for
others!

Good afternoon

Not sure of the rules for using this forum and guess I'm using someone
else's thread. Apologies.

I've just had to reinstall XP Home and sp2. I now have no sound. I have
read that the problem is related to the software device enumerator but don't
understand the solution. It seems that I have to copy streamci.dll and
swenum? into a temporary folder - modify the swenum by removing line 20 and
save the file in a temporary folder. Then to go to Add new hardware/have
disk and direct XP to the temporary folder. Should that solve the sound
problem? Many thanks (non techie) Ian

Hi Paul

I'm still a little confused. Having placed PnP software device enumerator
in c:\temp what do I do with streamci.dll and swenum?

Many thanks

ian

Had the same problem with Vista...(no audio device installed)
Try this it works.........first go to microsoft and install the upgrade
(KB929685).....then go to the control panel>system>device
manager.....highlight the sound controller.......uninstall the High
Defination Sound Device and uninstall the driver (check box)........restart
the computer and the system will reinstall both and the upgrade prevents it
from happening again.

Ian, this is Jack2656. You don’t have to do anything with streamci.dll and
swenum. Copy the file machine.inf from your windows folder on the boot drive
(usually C:\ ) in to the temp folder. The path on my WinXP Pro computer is
C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf. Modify the machine.inf file (you can open it
with notepad) by deleting line 20: ExcludeFromSelect=*. I had uninstalled
the Plug and Play Software Enumerator so I reinstalled it with the Add
Hardware wizard. Here’s a step-by-step description of what I had to do
(remember I have XP Pro so it might be a little different in XP Home).

- Open the Add Hardware wizard and select Next on the Welcome window.
- On the Is the Hardware connected? Window select the Yes button, then
select next.
- The next window listed the hardware already installed on my computer. At
the bottom of the list select Add a New Hardware Device, then select Next.
- On the next window select Install the Hardware I Manually select from a
List (Advanced), then select Next.
- On the next window select Show All Devices, then select Next.
- The next window has a left and a right side. In the left side, labeled
Manufacturer, select (Standard system devices) and on the right, or Model,
side select Plug and Play Software Enumerator, then select Have Disk.
- On the Install From Disk window select Browse and navigate to the
machine.inf file in the Temp folder you created, then select Open. Select OK
on the Install From Disk window and make sure Plug and Play Software
Enumerator is still selected in the Model window (I had to repeat the Have
Disk selection a couple of time before Plug and Play Software Enumerator
stayed selected). Wtih Plug and Play Software Enumerator highlighted select
next and it will install it.

Now you can go to the System folder in Control Panel and select Device
Manager from the Hardware tab and make sure the Plug and Play Software
Enumerator is installed without a yellow exclamation mark. If it is then
uninstall your sound driver and restart your computer if it asks you to (If
it doesn’t then just right click on Sound, video and game controller in
device manager and it will reinstall the sound driver). If you rebooted
Windows it should install the sound card for you and the sound card should
now work.

Good Luck

Good morning jack2656

This will be today's task. Many thanks for help.

Hello again jack2656

Well, I followed your instructions to the letter but still have the
yellow/black exclamation mark alongside software device enumerator I'm
afraid. At one point I had two software device enumerator entries but now
realise that you said you had removed your entry. Went through the process
one more time having removed it but still finished with the yellow and black!
I did get a warning at one point that the driver wasn't digitally signed?

Everything had been working fine until my hard drive wouldn't boot a few
days ago and I switched to the backup which was about a month old. One thing
I could not understand is that on booting up with the back up drive and
connecting to the internet I began to receive Windows updates from Microsoft
(including SP2) which should have already been installed as my original
XPHome installation disk included SP2. Didn't realise that I didnt have
sound until the audio beep began to make its presence felt. I guess I could
start from scratch but not sure I'm up to a full install :(
Grateful for any suggestions.

Regards

It's likely you've got a significant number of "Phantom" device entries in
Device Manager. By default XP doesn't show "Plug-&-Play" phantoms
even if you tic/check "Show Hidden Devices".
To be able to see those P/P phantoms you have to add a new System
Environment Variable named, "DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices"
and set it's value = 1. (No quotes - only shown for emphasis)
Once that is done, checking "Show Hidden Devices" will display 100%
of devices. Devices in each category that are shown in diminished tone
or grayed out are either Devices once connected and not currently active
or true Phantoms ( Duplicates or old entries ).
You can safely remove phantom entries from every category EXCEPT
for Sounds. There are codecs and other entries that normally appear in
diminished tone and should not be removed. When going through the
categories be aware that anything you normally use but might not be on
or connected shouldn't be removed. ( USB category, Storage Volumes...)

Just take your time reviewing and you should be O.K.

Hi Ian, sorry you are still having trouble and hope R McCarty's sugestions
will help you. In reading your reply it sounded like you may have only
removed one of the PnP SW enumerators when you saw there 2 of them. I think
it would have been better to remove them both before trying to install it
again.

Keep trying you'll get it there!

jack2656

Good morning and thanks to R McCarty and Jack 2656 for responding.

I cannot get past the point where I try to reinstall the pnpsofware
enumerator. I get a warning when I reach the installation of drivers,
telling me that they are not digitally signed!. I've also reached the limit
of my knowledge as I don't know how to add a new environmental variable.
Other threads have mentioned making sure that WinAudio is enabled or running
but I can't find any sign of that on my XP home system.

I'm still keen to resolve this but my wife has started to introduce herself
as a member of staff when she brings food or drink to my "office". I've a
feeling that I will have to pay for this at sometime in the future.

Thanks again

One other thing I'm wondering is did you delete all the registry entries for
swenum as mentioned in Paul 3-30-07 post? If not go back and uninstall the
PnP enumerator then delete the registry entries and go through the steps to
reinstall.

To delete registry entries Select the start button then select Run and type
in regedit.
- On the Registry Editor window select the Edit menu then select Find.
- In the find what window type in swenum then select Find Next.
- Use the delete key to delete any entries it finds. (select F3 after each
delete and it will find the next entry)

When you go to reinstall the enumerator and you get the message about not
being digitally sign you should be able to select a button that says
something like Install Anyway.

Good afternoon Jack

I'm almost there. Had read about deleting registry entries but I was a
little bit scared at the propect! Anyway, courage in both hands and
followed your instructions to the letter. Well, what can I say? I now have
pnp software enumerator in system properties. My sound device is still greyed
out. I thought that I'd read from you that I have to remove the sound driver
or sound card to complete the process but can't find that bit of information
anywhere. This is the closest I've been to success though.

Thanks once again.

Ian

I'm having exactly the same problem with a Dell Dimension 2400 I put a new
hard drive in, reinstalled Windows, got service pack 2 and it sez my sound is
"enabled but not started". I have a yellow exlamation point by my 'plug and
ply anumerator'. I think I will look at that. Thanks Paul and darkrats.
