Asus MoBo compatible with XP Barton?

I'm thinking of upgrading my home-built PC's processor. I originally built
in an XP2100+ but this is running at 72 degrees C, even when it's slowed
down to 1300MHz and won't boot into windows at all when set to "full" speed
(1733).

It's always run hot and I tried replacing the pad that came with it for
another one (not easy removing the original thermal pad at all!!) and it's
still running hot.

Basically I'm just wanting to know if it's worth my while upgrading my CPU
to a Barton. My MoBo is an Asus A7V333.

At the bottom of this article:
http://www.digital-daily.com/motherboard/amd-barton/
it says
a.. ASUS A7V333 rev1.04
a.. ASUS A7V333 rev2.0

When I boot my PC it says BIOS revision 1011 so I think that's too old. The
Bioses don't go up to 2 or 1.04 though so I'm presuming it's actually a
different piece of hardware I would need. In which case I don't know which
revision mine is or even how to check. Does anyone have any experience of
this problem?

Thanks,
Steve

try updating your bios

use rubbing alcohol to remove the paste and try artic silver 3 or 5.
Also try a new heatsink. Are you using stock?

What case fans do you have, where are they placed, and what direction
are they blowing? What's your system temp? I assume you're using
appropriate RAM.

Did you jar the new pad at all after its first use? If so, you may have
disrupted the interface. What heat sink are you using? What fan?

Board version and BIOS version are two different things. Board version
is printed on the PCB board of the motherboard itself (or should
be/usually is). It's a reference to the physical makeup of the
motherboard. Over time manufacturers make subtle changes (and sometimes
not so subtle changes).

Open your case and read your board.

Read the board.

Thanks for the tips. I had used Methylated Sprits (basically the same
stuff, closest you can get in the UK) to remove the gunk from the CPU
before but it wasn't easy lol. I may try arctic silver next time it's just
that I've never done this sort of thing before and I didn't want to screw
it up first time.

There's just one case fan at the back by the processor, blowing out. The
RAM's fine and MoBo temp is only 34 degrees. I thought the basic setup
would be OK, I don't want an ice-cold machine just one that isn't
dangerously hot

Sorry, I don't know what you mean - jar? The heatsink and fan are the
AMD retail ones that came with the CPU.

Umm, no, it isn't. I wouldn't want to get that anywhere near my PC.
Acetone or alcohol swabs if you can't find rubbing alcohol.

That all sounds fine.

jar: "To bump or cause to move or shake from impact."

That HSF should be fine, too.

What program are you using to determine CPU temp?

Just in case you don't know, in the U.S. rubbing alchol is isopropyl alcohol.

I misinterpreted what he posted. I got it in my head that he was
referring either to mineralised methylated spirits or mineral turpentine.
