Asus A7V600-X Sound Issue

Hi!

Got a problem here. Never thought it could happen :)

I bought an A7V600-X with onboard sound. I installed the drivers that
were given on the motherboard CDROM and the sound wasn't working at
all. I got the drivers off the asus website and installed them. Still
not working. I also upgraded the BIOS firmware to 1002.

I checked everything but it's really not working.
When I raise the sound volume in the sound manager I can hear a noise
of the PC Speaker like no sound card is installed.

Anyone had this problem before ?
Any hint that would make it work ?

ps: It's a machine running Windows XP SP1

Are the two jumpers installed on the FP_AUDIO 2x5 header ? There
is a diagram of how they are supposed to be installed on page
1-22 of the manual. The two jumpers have to be installed, to
get sound on the lime colored connector on the back of the
computer.

Many sound chips now have jack sensing, which means the chip
configures sound based on what is plugged into the motherboard.
For your first test, you should only have something connected
to the lime colored connector on the back of the computer,
so the sound system will be running in 2 channel mode (stereo).
I would start by connecting 32 ohm headphones to the lime
colored jack, as onboard sound is not designed to drive a
heavier load than that. In fact, when running in 6 channel mode,
the other four channels are only rated for a 600 ohm load and
are only suited for connecting to an external amplifier or
amplified speakers. Outputs are line level (one volt RMS or so).

If you have installed DirectX in Windows, there is a program
called "dxdiag" on your hard drive, and it has a couple of
sound tests you can try.

On the Asus download page, there is a Soundmax package:

http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=A7V600-X&Type=All&SLanguage=en-us

The WDM_3663.zip file is 19MB and you could try that if you still
aren't getting anywhere.

Have a look in the Device Manager, to see if anything is installed
for sound.

HTH,
Paul
