asus a7n8x-x What RAM?

Hi, I'm new to google groups and to forums in general. I'm also new to
building PC systems but I'm about to have a go.

I've just ordered the a7n8x-x and will build my system around it using
my existing hardware. I want to upgrade the CPU to probably the XP
2600 333MHz. What would anyone suggest RAM-wise?

1. Any old 333MHz RAM
2. Good quaility RAM (what kind?)
3. 400MHz RAM (and overclock the CPU?)

Or any better advice will be gratefully received.

I'll be running Windows98 for a while anyway. And I've ordered a 350w
PSU as the one I've got is broke (fan).

Thank and I hope you all enjoy leading me astray.

Dave.

Hi, since you won't be running above 333MHz you really don't need 400MHz
ram, but you do need good quality ram. I always use Corsair brand.
You might get by on luck without memory error's or windows crash's using
bulk no-name ram, but Asus name brand retail boards require good ram more
so than say their Asus OEM boards you might find in DEll, Gateway, etc.

If I got 400MHz RAM, could I not overclock the FSB to take advantage
of the extra ceiling in the RAM at some later point?

Hi, according to my manual I have for my A7V8x-x [VIA chipset] Revision 1.0
this x-x board front side bus is limited to 166, 200, 333Mhz but I think
the A7N8X Deluxe board might allow 400Mhz bus?

This x-x board manual says it takes "max 3GB unbuffered PC2100/16000 non-
ECC DDR SDRAM (note PC3200 maximum to 2 banks only. PC2700 maximum to 4
banks only)" but the x-x board only has 3 DDR DIMM Sockets!

You might want to get the A7N8X-Deluxe board?

I'm pretty sure the board I've ordered can run at 400MHz FSB. Don't
have the info to hand at the moment (I'm in a class!), but I'm pretty
sure. I'll check later. If you board doesn't allow for 400MHz, why
does it specify for PC3200 RAM? Just curious.
Thanks for your replies.

Hi, I don't know why? I'm using 1 512mg Corsair PC2700
This is one first boards Asus put out in this model, its a revision 1.0,
maybe newer ones support 400MHz bus?

Anyway, I think I've decided to go for the 2500+Barton and overclock
it. The quetion is???--should I get the PC3200 RAM and then oc the FSB
to 200MHz and hope everything stays stable? (if I do this do I really
need high quaility RAM such as Corsair?)

Or I could just get PC2700 RAM and increase the multipier, keeping the
FSB at 333MHz.

Could the good folks give me the benifit of their experience on this.
How much of a gamble would it be??

Much love

Never hurts to at least buy a known brand name with a life time warranty
and of course ram modules that are known to work in the mobo you have.

That will work if the CPU you have is multiplier unlocked, AMD started
locking the chips around production week 39 of 2003.

Buying any hardware and expecting it to run faster then what you're
paying for is always a gamble, do you feel lucky punk? :)
Much love

Good luck and may the silicon gods be with you!

Hi, as long as you don't buy bulk RAM that often contains different brands
you should get by, might try Crucial ram made by Micron, its cheaper but
decent and guarantied, http://www.crucial.com/
