Asus 8600GT problem.

ok theres a few weird issues with this card.

system specs
------
asus m2n-e sli motherboard
amd x2 dual core 4400+ cpu
1gb corsair ddr2 ram
2 x 200gb SATA hdd's
1 x 200gb IDE hdd
1 x 80gb IDE hdd (all western digital)
256mb ASUS EN8600GT PCI-E graphics card
600w PSU

now first weird issue.
the video card reports itself as being a 512mb card in windows system
info.
my old 7300gs also reported itself as having twice the actual memory
in this system.
is this something to do with dual core processors??

which leads me to my next issue.
my computer is now too fast for 99% of games i play.
grand theft auto san andreas is running ridiculously fast with all the
detail options set to full both in game, and in the nvidia control
panel.
FPS counter ranges between 65fps and 110fps.
which makes playing near on impossible.
and i have got the ingame frame limiter turned on
also tried it with this option off.. and still no joy =/

but i find that if i play one game.
the next time i try to play a different game.
the video card behaves erratically. so i shut down, restart.
then the game works fine, its as tho the video card is caching a whole
heap of stuff from the previous game and not clearing the memory out

nhl 2007 works fantastic most of the time at 1600x1200 res.. good
framerate of around 50 - 60., but if i play any game before that. the
frame rate jumps to about 90
and the players all flicker on and off.
and the gameplay is too fast to watch.

is there any way i can limit the framerate?
is the video card faulty
i have just updated to the latest forceware drivers and that hasnt
resolved my issue

any suggestions on anything i can do to make this thing behave as it
should?!

--------
ps.
newer games like

c&c 3 tiberium wars
stalker
f.e.a.r

all run quite beautifully at all points tho.

Might even be better to start at the last page and work backwards. )

"The amd drivers are recomended for the speed ups and slow downs in games,
looks like a fast forwarding of a movie........without drivers you might
run into this problem, for example Need for Speed most wanted runs into
this problem without the amd drivers, good luck."

The AMD driver page is here. I see two items of interest on this page.

AMD Dual-Core Optimizer (don't install this yet)

AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver Version 1.3.2.0053
for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (x86 and x64) -- near bottom of page

I would install the second of those first, and your video speed may settle
down.

The link at the top of my post, is a long winded review of the effects of
trying several things. There are those two AMD items, plus there is
"update revision 4" from Microsoft. That is this thing.

(Update revision 4)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896256

So, do a little more research into which of these three things to apply,
and in what order, and perhaps you'll see an improvement. It could be,
install the Dual Core Processor Driver, install KB896256, and maybe
that will be enough to fix things for you.

I think you might need the Dual Core Processor Driver, in order
to make Cool N' Quiet work properly.

I notice the first posting in that thread, mentions /usepmtimer in the boot.ini.
So I suppose that is something else to screw around with.

In the spirit of sharing recipes, if you get it fixed, post back what
you did :)

I don't have one of these systems, and maybe someone who does, can post
their recipe for setting up an X2.

HTH,
Paul
