Assigning file type extension to my application

I've written an app that saves and opens files of extension .dnm

How can I assign the .dnml extension to my app, MyApp.exe

I know you can do this in an msi package, but i dont want to create an msi. i'd like to know the manual steps, all the places in the registry, that i need to modify in order to get this working
