Assigning/Embedding Profiles

Epson Scan apparently does not embed a profile when saving a scan. What
profile should I assign to the image when I open it in Photoshop?
Should the assigned profile be Adobe RGB (1998)? I assume that the
assigned profile will be embedded. Will that profile serve a variety of
output purposes? I'm working with a Macintosh G5. If this topic is not
appropriate to this group, please suggest a more appropriate newsgroup.

There's really no consistency when it
comes to input (ie., scanner, or camera)
profles. Scanner drivers are notorious
in this regard.

OTOH, it's no big deal. If you have a
profiled/calibrated monitor, then trust
your eyes, and pay attention to the
image histograms (red, green and blue.)

The *main* thing is to make sure that
the image histogram looks reasonable --
ie., not clipped at either end, in any
color channel, and not wasting too
much of the available tonal range, in
any channel.

If you've done that, everything else
is fixable in Photoshop.

Use a reasonable working space. AdobeRGB
is probably fine, if you know how to use
color management. If not, use sRGB.

Assign the image to your working space
when you open it, and be happy.

Profile tags while scanning is not too much of an issue, as the profiles
can be assigned in Photoshop. The intended use of the image should
determine which profile should be attached. For example, some devices are
calibrated to sRGB, others Adobe RGB 1998, and others to yet other
profiles such as SWOP. For this reason, it may even be desirable to keep a
"raw" scan without a profile if you know that you will be using the image
file with different output intents.

Hope this helps,

Neil
