I have a laptop that only has a c drive. It has a DVDRom
drive in it.

What I know about Automated System Recovery is that it
creates a floppy and also creates a large backup file
that is used when you perform an ASR. Since I only have
a C drive I obviously can not store the backup file there
since part of the ASR process is to format the drive. My
Question is this. Could I not create the ASR and put the
backup on the c drive, the transfer the file over to my
PC with a DVD Burner, then burn the ASR file to a DVD,
then when the ASR restore process promtps for the
location of the file, just pop in the DVD?

Wouldn't it be easier to get a 3rd party imaging program and write the ..bkf file directly to the DVD? I use True Image from www.acronis.com HTH.

That wasn't what my question was. I am aware of all the
third party tools and how to use them. My qusetion
concerns the feasability of using MS's ASR in this way.
I am loking for a responce from someone that has used ASR
and stored the ASR file on some type of removable media.

I have used ASR, the .bkf file was stored on a 2nd HDD however. Since the floppy that would be created points to the location of the .bkf file, how would it know that it is now on a DVD and to restore from there?

The location on the floppy is just a default if you used
ASR then you know it will prompt you for the location.
It always asks the location before proceeding.

I am just not sure at the point whether or not it can
read the cd/dvd rom, I guess I do not see why not, but I
just wanted confirmation.

How are you going to get the software loaded to be able to read the DVD, is the other side of the question.

I do not recall ASR asking for the file location when runing it (ASR), I last used ASR well over a year ago though.
