ASR fails on a system which has successfully created sets
in the past with the following message:

The files for the recovery diskette could not be created.
The operation was aborted.

Backup is to a separate drive which has sufficient free
space (and the page file).

XP pro, sp1. Any suggestions?

| these articles offer no help. I am using XP Pro but this
| message seems to apply to the home version? Can windows
| get confused?

I have exactly the same problem, with XP Professional, SP1a, and ASR
(Automatic System Recovery) backup creation as was discussed in a thread
started in this group on 3/15/2004 by "bk".

Namely: When I try to use the Windows XP Pro Automatic System Recovery
Wizard to create a backup file along with the associated diskette, I get
the error message:

The files for the recovery diskette could not be created.
The operation was aborted.

But threee days ago I had no problem making an ASR backup set and
associated diskette! So something has changed that caused this
different result.

I emphasize that this is with XP Pro, and not Home. And it worked before.

I followed the aforementioned thread, and nothing seemed directly
relevant: my pagefile is already on the system partition, C:.

I can tell you this: I had installed Roxio Drag-to-Disk (formerly known
as DirectCD) yesterday to use with a Plextor DVD writer. That is an
extension to the file system that, to my surprise, added to Windows
Explorer "local volumes" corresponding to the several non-Windows (in
fact, Linux) partitions on my 2nd hard drive; and that installation also
messed up my drive letters.

That much is now ostensibly repaired: I uninstalled Drag-to-Disk; delted
the Linux partitions; and reset the NTFS (and one FAT) partition letters
to what they should be. Note that the drive letter for C: never
changed, of course.

I've found nothing relevant in the Microsoft Knowledge Base -- just the
one article about the same error with ASR in XP Home.

I should add that the backup accessory itself is working: I can, for
example, back up the SystemState. (THis backs up MUCH lesss than ASR:
on my system, only around 365MB for SystemState backup vs. over 2 GB for
an ASR backup when I could still use ASR.)

And I have some 39 GB free space on the NTFS partition on my 2nd hard
drive to which I save such backups.
