AsciiDiff query.

When using the above recently with DataFilter the results I got were
in two colours, and when I deleted common items I had large gaps in
the display. So my questions are ;

(1) Is there any way to get rid of the gaps ?

If I "cut and paste" then I lose the colours when inserted in a text
editor. So...

(2) Is there any way to "cut and paste" a coloured text display such
as the one in DataFilter and have it show the same colours in another
application ? So that I can delete the spaces ?

I think Adrian reads this newsgroup sometimes so maybe he can
contribute ? Perhaps a "remove gaps" function could be added to
DataFilter ?

Regards, John.

Hi John,

I suspect your gaps are the empty spaces that AsciiDiff inserts so as
to keep the matching blocks of text in synch. If so, they actually have
a green colour attribute, and can be removed within DataFilter by
selecting the checkbox corresponding to green before hitting the
Filter button. It is for exactly this purpose that I included the green
checkbox.
If not - then your gaps are real empty lines from within your files.
You can tell which is which - just try typing any character in one
of your gaps, and see what colour it shows up as.
Regarding your "cut and paste" question - if I cut/copy text out of
DataFilter and/or AsciiDiff, then paste into WordPad, the colours
are preserved. Same story in MS Word - and I would expect the
same in any word processor or editor that is rich text capable.

HTH,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for your input. :)

The gaps came about when I de-selected lines that were the same in
both files I was comparing.

Great ! In the absence of getting rid of the gaps in DataFilter that
will be very handy.

Now I need to work out a way to get rid of multiple blank lines in
WordPad. Can anyone suggest a method ?

Regards, John.

Not in WordPad. An editor such as Crypt Edit, I just select & copy an
area that I know to include some paragraph marks. Then paste the clipboard
contents into the "search" box of its S+R dialog, hit OK. That wipes out
the blank lines.

This is assuming you're doing one file at a time. Or, was it instead you
were looking to do a multi-file thing from the outside, using a dedicated
Search/Replace utility?

Hi John
Thanks for your input. :)

You're welcome.

Hmm, doesn't sound right. Maybe we have a bug, maybe I don't
understand your explanation. The 4 checkboxes in DataFilter are
there to facilitate removal of matched text (black) and both
categories of unmatched text (blue & red) and empty space (green)
put in to maintain synchronisation of text in AsciiDiff. To remove lines
that are the same in both files, tick the black checkbox (leftmost and
topmost in group of 4), then hit Filter button. Is this what you did?
Could you perhaps send me a sample of 2 files to exhibit the problem
you're having? My email address in this NG is garbage, but the real
email is in the help files for both DataFilter & AsciiDiff.

Regards,
Adrian
