Mozilla Firefox 1.0 PR

R

Roy

why would anyone want to download from anywhere other than from
the mozilla site ??

To relieve the inevitable excessive load on Mozilla's own servers, I would
suggest.

I downloaded this installer from Major Geeks, no problems, ran the
installer, no problems, and ran the new version. That's when the problems
started.

An error message of some kind popped up telling me that I was running the
wrong sort of Java (I'm certainly not) and seemed to think that I was using
it with Internet Explorer! The fact that I'd stripped out Microsoft's
Virtual Machine from IE6 is irrelevant, but I find it very puzzling indeed
that the application should think that I was opening IE!

I cancelled the warning and carried on, but Firefox failed to appear. It
was, however, using 80% of my CPU, so I killed it.

A subsequent uninstall followed by a reinstall produced an identical
result.

Luckily I still had the installer for 0.9.3 which worked correctly, but
only after removing every trace of 1.0.

In the end I lost nothing, except a good deal of time. I'd suggest waiting
a while before trying to install this one.

I'm running XP SP1 here, by the way.

Cheers,

Roy

In that case my best guess is a clash with version 0.9.3, which was already
present, but not running of course.

The installer made no mention of uninstalling that version, and in fact
automatically selected the 0.9.3 folder, in a non-standard location and on
a second hard drive. I finally managed to reinstall 0.9.3 only after
removing both version 1.0 and 0.9.3.

I'm not too keen on repeating the process just yet, so I'll wait and see
what others experience and learn from that.

By contrast, the latest Mozilla, 1.7.3, installed and ran faultlessly first
time. Perhaps the programmers for that might like to pass on a few tips to
the Firefox team?

Cheers,

Roy

Hi Roy,
I've installed the 1.0 over the 0.9.3, me too, then maybe there was
something wrong in your profile?
Anyway, wait a little, also because a lot of extensions don't work with the
1.0 version, they need to be updated.
Now I'm missing for example the TabBrowserPreferences...

Ciao,

I hope this update-all-your-extensions-too-when-you-update-the-program
thing won't be lasting. I believe they're working on a better extension-
handling engine, too.

No problems here. Updated from FF 0.9.1+ nightly to 1.0PR without failure, just
removed extensions. Windows 98 SE.

No problems here either, apart from a couple of extensions not working. I
just installed FF 1 PR into a different folder and now I can pick which
version I want to use. :)

Firefox popup blocker has gone into idiot mode. I can't click on the
"Invite frineds to GMail link" as the popup blocker blocks it despite
being added to allowed sites. One step forward, three back...

Ciao,

After my last post, I paid a visit to the Firefox forums and found detailed
instructions for a 'painless' uninstall of 0.9.3 plus installation of 1.0
without losing any of ones's profiles etc.. I printed the instructions, and
then applied them to the letter, including the re-boots. The outcome was
exactly as before, except it then became impossible to reinstall 0.9.3.

I came to the same conclusion as you have regarding my profile, so I
decided to bite the bullet, vape the whole installation, and go for a clean
installation of 1.0.

That worked, and continues to work, although Firefox still has the nasty
occasional of habit of suddenly shutting down when certain pages are
visited, especially those Firefox update pages! On a restart they are once
more available.

At the moment I'm rather disappointed with this version, and for the
reasons you give above. Annoyingly versions which the extensions pages show
as working with it simply don't when you try to install them. I've noticed
that selecting 'install' doesn't always download the version shown.

Ho hum, I expect those things will improve given a little time, but I was
really p*ss*d off with Firefox by the time I eventually got to bed.

Cheers,

Roy

Anyway, wait a little, also because a lot of extensions don't work
with the 1.0 version, they need to be updated.

My experience is most of the extensions work fine the reason they are
disabled is because they are not explictly marked as allowed for 0.10.
Also extensions marked for only 0.9 will not install with the current
firefox.

Two Ways to get around the problem.

1) Repackage the extension yourself. It isn't hard really, just open the
xpi file with a proggie like zipgenius. Open the install.rdf file and
edit the <em:maxVersion> tags , to read <em:maxVersion>0.10
</em:maxVersion> instead of 0.9, repackage everything and you will have
an extension that can be installed by firefox.

2) This method is easier, in the location bar, type about:config. Search
for a setting called app.extensions.version, change that to 0.9, this
will allow firefox to install all extensions marked for 0.9.

Try all this at your own risk, I recommened backing up your profile.

I hope this update-all-your-extensions-too-when-you-update-the-program
thing won't be lasting. I believe they're working on a better extension-
handling engine, too.

Hmm my 1.0 PR noted which extensions were not marked for 0.1, disabled
them , then asked me if I wanted to check for updates to those
extensions, it then downloaded and installed them. Pretty painless.

Still had quite a few that had no updates, but I easily fixed those to
work with 1.0 PR.

Cool, I'll try it.

This is odd. When I check for updates I get always the answer that there
weren't available updates. I have to check myself on the author's sites.

Thanks for the hints :)

I'm having to do that too. First I installed the ListZilla extension,
which makes it easier to track them down, at least for me. It "outputs
either a plain text, vB code, or HTML file that lists all installed
themes or extensions", and it splits the list into enabled and disabled
extensions.

For me, it worked for a few extensions, Adblock , Imagezoomer and 3 or 4
more that I can't recall.
