ASCII Text Editor

Can anyone recomend a completely ASCII text editor, similar to the old
DOS text editors. It can have bells and whistles, but I probably will
not use them

TIA John

Maybe a silly suggestion, but do know that Edit is still lurking in all
versions of Windows and seems to be what you're requesting? Just go to
Start->Run, enter Edit in the box, hit Enter and you're away.

I have loaded a 5MB Text file with Notepad, it is not so limited as the
old DOS Edit. When I start Edit it loads the DOS Version (Dual Boot,
XP/DOS6.22), so 'Edit' might only be with Win9x/ME (and Notepad, so far
I remember).

Notepad is function-key compatible to the old Edit. Also Shift-DEL and
Shift-INS is still implemented, as well as the Std.Windows Ctrl-C
Ctrl-V for copying and inserting etc.

Although, I am pretty sure you can find various freeware editor, too.

Edit is available from Win95 right through to XP - it's in Server 2003
too, just had a quick check on my copy...

That said, I'm sure there are much better console based editors out
there. Haven't needed one for a while though. Maybe a Win32 port of
Nano/Pico?

Well Well, that does bring back memories. We have moved on a lot.

This reminded me of the old Programmer's File Editor (PFE). ISTR
development stopped some time ago, but it's probably still kicking
around the Web.

Anyone tried it under modern versions of Windows?

Cheers, Phred.

I run it under Win2k - it's still my text editor of choice.

Yeah. Version 1.01 included NT4 and 2k as intended targets -- but
only on Intel processors.

I *assume* it will run on XP, but haven't tried it.

The executables are still available at:
<http://www.lancs.ac.uk/people/steveb/cpaap/pfe/pfefiles.htm>

32-bit for Win9*, NT4, 2k and 16-bit for Win3.1*

Still can't recall where I saw it, but I think Alan Phillips announced
to the world some time ago that 1.01 was to be the final version.

Cheers, Phred.

This note has been on his original home page. The current PFE page
(and the mirrors) are only copies of Alans homepage as it was
*before* he stalled development.

The end of development struck me like a lightning bolt at that time.
We had mailed about possible improvements and he expressed plans for
new useful features, but sure made *no* promises.

Be it as it may:
PFE has an assured place in my personal Freeware hall of fame of
all times.
