"arrange icons by type" + "show in groups" sorting

In Windows XP, suppose I set the preferences for viewing folders as: "arrange icons by type" + "show in groups". Next time I open this folder, the tiles are neatly arranged by groups: "Adobe Acrobat document", "Text document" etc.

However, within each group the files are not in the alphabetical order! (In fact, I can not discern any rule for the order at all). When I hit "Refresh", they get sorted alphabetically.

So now I must hit "Refresh" every time I open a folder. This is incredibly annoying! How do I fix this?

Thank you in advance.

V.A.,
I am experiencing the same anomoly as you described below. Did you
ever get a resolution on this issue? I'd be interested in hearing what
you found out.
