are they F**kups or are they Memorex? You decide.

Bought Memorex Travel Drive - usb thumb drive

Used it exactly twice before it konked out.

Tech support at memorex told me the drive was bad and
they would replace it. This came from Michael Clancy,
"Manager, Technical Support and Customer Service Groups"

I mailed it back to them and two weeks later, still waiting
for the drive.

Tech support at Memorex guy first says he was "on vacation"

Then says there is problem with the address through UPS.
Turns out they did not give the correct address to UPS or UPS
screwed up, not apartment number.

Then Clancy who has already admitted he received the bad drive,
tells me I have to trace it through UPS!

So far waiting about 3 weeks now and no drive. Called UPS and talked to
a Customer Service Drone who (probably using a fake name) said his name
was Dunn, telling me the package will be delivered next day. Next day,
still no delivery.

Both my thumb drives from other Mfg. all through this, work flawlessly.

Not only does memorex make shit travel drives, but their warranties
aren't any good either and Michael Clancy + UPS either too incompetent
or negligent to even write get my address correctly. Then the jerk
expects me to follow up on their and/or UPS's mistake on the address.

What a bunch of incompetents. I'll never touch a memorex product
again. And don't ship with UPS, another screw**up Company.

I bought one of their CD burners a year or so after I bought this PC in
around 1996.

The drive was the cheapest on the market at the time at £233 ($460) when all
others were around the £350 to £450 mark! This was a x2, write only device.
The prices seem incredible nowadays.

I admit it worked fine for around 18 months but then it gradually
deteriorated, becoming more and more temperamental as time went by. I even
thought an insect might have taken up residence inside it!

It was out of guarantee by then of course, so no luck with Memorex. I just
stopped expecting the disks to be 100% and checked what was accessible and
what wasn't straight after I'd burned a disk and kept any inaccessible stuff
back for inclusion on the next disk.

A cleaning disk made little difference but I did manage to revive it a
little by having it apart a couple of times and giving it a thorough clean
and lubricate - but not for long - and in January it packed up completely.

I have a couple of neighbours with ancient PCs with equally ancient CD-R
drives that are still going strong and haven't produced a single table mat
yet!

With regard to Flash Drives, I bought a Verbatim one a few weeks ago to
transfer data from this antique to my nice new HP Pavilion Media Centre and
it's worked fine.

This little red stick thing also makes the Jaz Drives I also got ripped off
on look even more pathetic!

Nemo.
Ohhhh! It's really like being in heaven, to retire in 2007!!

I wouldn't buy Memorex anything. Their blank cassettes suck in the
80's and their blank CDs suck now. I wouldn't trust anything they
manufacture or even put their name on.

Hello, Millhaven:

Indeed, once upon a time, Memorex was noted for lousy magnetic tape
(both audio and video) and poor quality control. "Memorex" exists in
name only, today, alas.

Hence, the "company" doesn't make anything, itself, but merely slaps
it labels on the products it sells. As those items come from diverse,
outside sources, their individual merits are more likely to vary, as
well.

Thank you for your input, it's much appreciated.

I am well aware how optical media is manufactured by only a few
companies worldwide with a label slapped on the top side. But the
Memorex problems didnt stop with some cassettes in the 1980's. I have
seen Memorex CDR and DVD (+/-)R media with black spots, maybe dirt
under the layer at the bottom of the media and visible on both sides.
I could feel the ridge when I ran my fingers over the top. I don't
know if it's just an anomoly or if Memorex is consciously buying B
stock at a lower price or discs manufactured at different standards
but I have bought lousy media from Memorex in 1985 and again in 2005.
I would rather just skip anything with that name anywhere on the
label.

My Maxells and TDK's cassettes bought in the 1980's and even my Fuji's
cassettes bought at a cut rate at the Tower Records outlet store in
Sherman Oaks on clearance in the 1990's still play just fine. I am
sure many here can say the same with Memorex media but I am not
willing to take any more chances.

Hello, Millhaven:

Well, my personal favorite was Scotch (3M). The vast majority of my VHS
recordings have been on that brand's cassettes, with a fair minority on
Target-labeled ones, made by 3M; I was sad to see Scotch exit the retail
magnetic tape market, in the 1990's.

[Target (U.S. national store chain) and 3M, are both based in Minnesota,
by the way.]

I began using VHS VCR's, during the early-to-mid eighties period. Back
then, I tried a few Memorexes, and now, regret doing so. They were full
of highly visible dropouts, whereas their Scotch counterparts had no
such defects.

Although, I may haven gotten off easy. My brother had a Memorex, which
shed its oxide coating all over his VCR's video heads. What a royal mess
it caused -- but luckily, a good, manual cleaning returned the machine
to normal operation.

Even the "standard grade" Memorex VHS cassettes of that era, featured
nice, plastic storage boxes (not sleeves, as others did). It's just
a shame that the tape, itself, was so crummy!
