Are there Master Documents in Word as in Word Perfect?

I'm forced to make the switch from WP to Word and am trying to keep an open
mind and positive attitude knowing they both do pretty much the same thing.
I'm finding though, I especially miss reveal codes. And things were just
easier in Word Perfect - I know it's because I've used it so long.

Here's my question: In WP, I could create a Master Document which contained
the names of subfiles, like chapters in a book. when the master was run, the
very large file was created with consistent styles and formatting. Each file
could be edited separately or in the open master. When the master was closed,
the edited files would be saved as the subfiles.

Is there anything like that in Word? I can't find it, probably because I
don't know what it's called in Word. Thanks for your help.

Word has a master document feature, but it is buggy. A safer approach is to
make use of INCLUDETEXT fields. See

Note that the article may not be updated for Word 2007. To use the Insert
File dialog box in that version, click the Insert tab, click the arrow on
the right of the Object button, and then choose Text from File.

Which version of Word are you running? I know that Word 2003 has that feature.

Although Word has a master document feature, but it actually causes
corruption, so most users avoid it. You can use INCLUDETEXT fields instead.

If you are using Word 2007, here's how to display the Insert File dialog
box: On the Insert tab, click the arrow on the Object button, and then click
Text from File.
