Are there different types of uninstall? (using freeware)

(1) When I use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs then my XP Pro
can take a long time (I have several 100 programs installed) to list
the applications.

(2) When I use the freeware "My Uninstaller" from Nir Sofer then it
is not really much quicker than XP's Add/Remove Programs.

(3) However "JV PowerTools" is much faster. Version 1.3 was the last
free version of "JV Powertools"
(available here "http://www.pricelessware.org/thelist/sys.htm")
If I go to "JV Powertools" > Registry Tool > Uninstall Tool to list
installed programs then I get a list of applications far more quickly
than in (1) or (2) above.

Is JV Powertools doing as thorough a job of listing the installed
apps as (1) or (2)?

And does it do as thorough a job of uninstalling apps as (1) or (2)?

Apps uninstall themselves. Windows does a lot of behind the scenes things for all entries like guessing the size and the frequency of use. It needs to guess. So it needs to search lots of places to gather info for it's guesses. They are often wrong but large coporates want wrong guesses, so we all get them. For recent programs the program supplies the info but if not windows guesses. It guesses by word matching Add/Remove with Start Menu and Program Files. For some apps multiple entries match (eg I have Microsoft Office 95/97/2000 installed. As all three will match equally with MS Office in A/R (each with two words matching) then windows chooses one at random from Start, gather it's frequency from the Start Menu MFU list, find a two word match in Program Files, total the size of this folder.

This is a lot of calculating for each entry.

Each entry is just a path to an uninstall program.

IMHO the best, and almost the fastest, uninstaller is PUI, now at
v1.06: <http://support.it-mate.co.uk/?mode=Products&act=DL&p=pui>
