Thanks for all the answers that came...
I recognize that one of the main drawbacks of these programs is the
inability to input standard win *.hlp files. Although beeing able to compile
them they all seem to input only formats that they will recognize. Please
correct me if I am mistaken.

I don't understand what you mean by "input standard win *.hlp files".
Could you give an example of what you're trying to do?

What I meant was to edit previously made windows help files (*.hlp). It
looks like all the freeware help creator programs can only read help files
created by themselves (have file extensions recognized only by their own
programs).

I don't know of any way to edit an existing .hlp file directly. There
are, however, tools available to decompile a .hlp into its component
..rtf files and images. These can be edited like any .rtf file (but with
some special care) and then recompiled into a new .hlp file. You'll find
all the (free) tools to do the job on www.helpmaster.com. Post back if
you have any problems with it.

Thank you very much for the info and link.
I think I can do the rest from there on.
