are dial up adaptors included on XP Home CD ?

I am currently off-line on my home pc due to dial-up connections problems. (I
have Win Me with BT Internet as my ISP)

While attempting to rectify this a dialogue box appeared telling me to
delete, and then add, the “Dial-Up Adaptors†found in CP/Networks.

I deleted then discovered that the Win Me disc given to me on purchase of my
PC (in 2000) is only the re-install version not the full operating version.
(!) I have run this disc but as expected the dial-up adaptors are not
included.

Using Me one option is to upgrade to XP Home. So if I install Home XP will
that also install the missing Dial Up Adapters for me ?

Many thanks for any help that can be given.

If you can borrow a Windows ME CD from anyone else, you can re-add the
connectors. You only need the CD for a few minutes.

XP deals with these a little differently (it's easier to create the
connections), but yes, if your system will work with XP, and you should
definitely check first, the XP CD will have what's needed.

If you can borrow an XP CD, there's an Upgrade Advisor on it. This will
appear if you insert the CD while Windows is running. It's very important
to run this and pay attention to the report it produces. It will identify
things that need to be, and critically, programs that must be removed prior
to the upgrade. Failure to remove these can leave you with an extremely
unstable or unbootable system. These often include virus scanners and
firewalls.

You can usually simply re-install them after the upgrade, as long as you
have XP compatible versions, versions compatible with the service pack level
(any new XP CD will be SP2). If they aren't compatible, do not use them.

Once XP is installed and the hardware is properly configured, it's easy to
re-create the dialup connections. You do not normally need the CD after
installation as the install files are copied to the hard disk as part of the
install process. Store it, and its sleeve with the install key, safely.

Note that if you get an Upgrade version of XP, which is considerably cheaper
than the full retail version, you may run into an issue later if you decide
to format and reinstall the system clean. Ths is because the Upgrade
versions want proof of qualification, which means inserting an older CD.
Restore CDs normally do not work for this.

Also, note that if you buy an "OEM" XP CD, you won't be able to simply
upgrade your ME version. These OEM versions are intended for installation
on new systems.
