are cumulative patch updates genuine?

By email I receive the following: this is the latest
version of security update, the "April 2004, Cumulative
Patch" update. (with Microsoft copyright logo). Being
suspicious, I go to the Microsoft update site, but am
informed that there are no critical updates. Are there
monthly cumulative patch updates?

I would have thought that the whole planet would know by now (but maybe not)
that Microsoft NEVER email unsolicited patches/updates to individuals. These
emails are viruses and not from MS, regardless of any forged credentials/logos.

But at least you were suspicious and checked the MS site!

Chris.

If you got it in an E-Mail, it's a virus. Destroy it. If you installed
it, you are infected.

Your suspicion is well-placed. The message is not from Microsoft,
and the attachment is not a patch, but a virus--probably SWEN.

Be aware that Microsoft *never* sends patches by E-mail.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question. I didn't
install and will delete right now. Thanks again. --DJ

In case you wonder what'd happen if you went ahead and install the patch.
My nephew's friend received such email and trustingly install the patch.
It destroyed his HD's MBR and he lost everything in his HD. Turned him into
a believer for regular backup.
And an unbeliever of any MS originated email.

Have A Happy Day !
