Archiver- save folders?

M

ms

I use PowerArchiver, works OK, but when it archives a folder that includes
subfolders, the PA resulting zip file when extracted, looses the subfolders.

Is there a way in PA to make this work?

Does IzArc do this OK?

If 7-Zip can do this, tell me how to archive and extract in that program, it has
the most screwed up set of icons I've seen in a archive util.

TIA

I know you didn't mention it but, ZipCentral can do this (been using it for
years)

Tick "Store full paths" or "Store relative paths" (depending on which)
you want when you add stuff.

Steve, the file where PowerArchiver fell down was from your page:
http://mysteryfcm.plus.com/software/?f=Grey_Olltwit/Games

It is gojigsaw, Jigsaw Maker, the folder has a subfolder called Templates.

I just tried ZipCentral, same result, the final extracted folder has no subfolder.
It's possible I missed a setting, although I checked Save Folder IIRC.

Could you kindly go to your page, get that file, and with ZipCentral, extract it,
then archive it, then extract it again, and see what you get?

Thanks,

Mike Sa

It works just fine here (templates folder is re-created as it should be when
extracted from the archive).

I'm confused. What does the result of a click and go install exe have
to do with your original question as top how to have Power Archiver
retain folders when extracting?

Thanks, dadiOH
In Power Archiver, I had been checking "store full path data" in creating the zip
file. The result later lost the subfolder in extraction.

I now find I also have to check "use full folder name" IIRC in the extraction
screen, then the subfolder is created in the extracted folder.
In the result, to find the desired folder, you need to browse down through about 3
folders to get to it, now a subfolder.

Is there a better way in PA?

I'm not quite sure what you are doing. Especially in relation to that
jigsaw program install exe...I don't see what PA has to do with it.

Speaking in general, if you zip a folder that has sub folders and if you
have PA set to "Store relative paths" and you then unzip that zip in a
folder somewhere that folder will wind up with exactly what you zipped
in the first place. And that is also exactly what you see if you just
open the zip file (assuming you have PA "view" set to use explorer
style - if you don't, you might want to use that).

I don't know where you are getting the "use full folder name", I have
nothing like that in v9.25

Steve:
I can recreate the subfolder, but it's a mess.

I have to click several "save all path data" choices, the final extracted folder
does contain the subfolder. BUT, this way the entire folder tree shows in the
extracted folder, this is the only way I can get it to happen in ZipCentral.

Are there settings to do it without the folder tree?

TIA

I'm using an archive util (PA) to archive a program folder (jigsaw maker).

That setting does not exist in my PA (see below)

I see that in the last freeware version 6.11.0 which I use, what are you using?

Mike,
See the following screenshots.

The first shows the ZC "Relative To" box, which should be set to the folder
that contains the sub-folders (in this case, C:\Olltwit\Jigsaw)

http://mysteryfcm.plus.com/misc/imgZC_Rel.gif

The second shows the Folder Names dropdown box

http://mysteryfcm.plus.com/misc/imgZC_RelDD.gif

If you don't set these up each time, you need to do it manually. However,
you can have ZC do it automatically for occasions where you are right
clicking a file in a folder (see the Options > Configuration)

Ah, I see. But why not just archive the install.exe? Trouble with
archiving the program folder is that any other changes made during
install (registry, system files, etc) won't be archived. If those sort
of changes have been made during install you won't be able to just unzip
your zip archive to reinstall. If files are added to the program folder
after install, just include those in the zip with the install.exe.

See above.
You have a good point if I was saving install files. But I find many programs
install only so you have to see the EULA. So I convert many of them to
executables, from then on it's a simple no-install for me. There are a few that
must remain installed, CCleaner is one.

Thanks for the help,

Thanks for the help, Steve. I really like the way ZipCentral works, will play with
it as above to see if I can retain subfolders. If no luck, maybe I can touch base
off line.
