Archived emails are missing

Hello,

We've been using Outlook 2007 for about a year or so now. I want to set up
auto-archiving for my users, but I ran into a snag. I had 1 user go ahead
and archive his emails up to a specific date. Everything appeared to run
fine. A couple of weeks later, he needed to open up one of the archived
emails. He opened up the archive folder, went to the inbox (which is grouped
by sender), and all of the emails from certain senders are gone. Has anybody
else ever experienced this issue? How would Outlook select which senders to
get rid of? I thought all of the archive settings would be at the inbox
level - not the sender level? Anyhow, I'm afraid to have anybody else use
the archive feature in Outlook 2007 until I can understand what has happened
to this user's emails. Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated.

Outlook would not delete mail from certain senders. Did he use search to see
if they were in either the original folder or the archive?

Well, Diane, I wouldn't think so either. But it is very odd. We opened both
his archive.pst and his outlook.pst folders. The emails from the same time
frame for more than one sender are gone. I could understand it if there were
archiving options at the group level within the Inbox - but I am stumped. We
did a search for the senders that he knows are missing. We also changed the
views so that every email is showing - it's not being filtered in any way.
Is it possible that he could have selected a setting wrong at the time he
archived his email? I didn't see anything in there that would cause this
scenario, but I might very well have missed it. I can't think of anywhere
else to look. He did have 2 archive.pst files on his machine, but I opened
both of them and one was empty. He changed the default location of the
archive.pst file in Outlook when he archived it - is it possible that might
have created this problem? Thank you for any help you can offer - I really
appreciate it.

The only way archiving would have deleted them is if it was set to delete
instead of archive - you'd be missing all mail within a certain date if that
happened.

(I'm not a big fan of automatically archiving - I prefer to move the
messages to an archive pst as I'm finished with them.)
