I recently moved from Outlook Express to Outlook and imported my mail
accordingly. I just learned that importing the email changes the modified
date to the date of the import. So for archiving purposes, Outlook sees the
import date as the received date. Is this correct? How can I view the
modified date for my email messages?

No, Outlook maintains 3 different dates; the send date, the received date
and the modified date. It uses the modified date for archiving. To view the
date open the message and choose File-> Properties

Thank you, Roady, I understand better now. Is my only choice to manually
move the mail I wish to archive from each folder in my main pst to the
corresponding folder in my archive pst?

For now, yes, or wait till your archive threshold is met again. Note that
Outlook 2003 and 2007 pst-files can reach 20GB but can even beyond that too.
As long as your performance is good (depends on your hardware) there isn't
really a need to archive. My main pst-file is over 1.5GB.
