open it in outlook, go File/Open/Outlook Data File, it shows up as a

I tried that already but it doesn't work. I started around the first of
August archiving my e-mails into my external hard drive. I was able to open
it once but now it will not open. The file is still a pst file but it was
trying to open with Adobe. i finally got the program to open it with changed
to Microsoft Outlook but when i try to open it says it cannot find the file
and for me to very the path.

As long as the file is a proper pst-file, you should have no issues opening
it via;
File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...

As this is done from within Outlook, it does not matter which other
application has been assigned the default for the pst-extension.
Have you scanned the pst-file for errors already with scanpst.exe? It might
be that somehow it got damaged in the process.

You cannot open a PST by double-clicking it in Windows Explorer. You can open
it only in Outlook with File>Open>Outlook Data File.
